A buyer cannot touch your product. The photos show what it looks like; the description tells them everything else. A good product description answers their questions before they ask — and that is what turns a visitor into a buyer.

The 5 questions every description must answer

  1. What is it? Name, type, material.
  2. How big or how much? Size, weight, quantity, measurements.
  3. Who is it for? Age, skin type, occasion, room.
  4. How do I use or care for it? Wash care, storage, shelf life.
  5. Why should I trust it? Where it is made, who made it, any certificate.

A simple format

  • One opening line — what it is and why it is special.
  • Short bullet points — size, material, colour, quantity.
  • Care or usage — two or three lines.
  • Delivery and returns — one line.

  • Length: 5.5 m + 0.8 m blouse piece (unstitched)
  • Fabric: cotton-silk
  • Colour: rani pink with gold border
  • Care: dry clean first time, then gentle hand wash

Example: sweets

  • Net weight: 500 g, sealed pouch
  • Shelf life: 45 days from packing date
  • Contains: gram flour, oil, spices
  • Store in an airtight container after opening

Example: home decor

Hand-carved mango wood tray, perfect for serving tea or as a festive table piece.

  • Size: 30 × 20 cm, 4 cm deep
  • Finish: natural, food-safe
  • Care: wipe with a dry cloth; do not soak

Example: beauty

  • Size: 30 ml
  • Skin type: normal to oily
  • Key ingredients: vitamin C, niacinamide
  • Use: 3–4 drops at night; use sunscreen in the day

Mistakes to avoid

  • Copying the same text across many products.
  • Big promises — "best quality", "100% guaranteed results".
  • Missing size or weight — the top reason for returns.
  • Long paragraphs nobody reads on a phone.

Write for Google too

Use the words buyers search: the product type, material and place — "cotton-silk Maheshwari saree", "Ratlami sev 500 g". Put them naturally in the first line, not stuffed in every sentence.

Our online stores give every product its own page with a title, description and photos, so each one can be found on Google. See online store plans or read how to write product titles that rank.

FAQs

What should a product description include?

What the product is, its size or weight, who it is for, how to use or care for it, and why the buyer should trust it.

How long should a product description be?

Short: one opening line, four to six bullet points and a line on care or delivery is enough for most products.

Can I copy descriptions from the manufacturer?

Avoid it. Write your own words so each page is unique, and add details only you know.

How do descriptions help with Google?

Using the words buyers search — type, material, place — helps Google understand and show your product page.
