India made about 1,370 million kg of tea in 2025, and Assam alone grew almost half of it (Tea Board data, reported by ETV Bharat). Most of that tea reaches homes through big brands — but more and more buyers now want fresh tea straight from the source. That is a real chance for small sellers.

1. Pick a clear range

Start with three or four teas you know well: a strong CTC for daily chai, an orthodox leaf tea, a green tea and maybe a masala blend. Add special teas — first flush, second flush, white tea — once buyers trust you.

2. Tell the story

Say where the tea was grown, which season it was picked and how it tastes. "Second-flush Assam, malty, good with milk" helps a buyer more than "premium tea".

3. Labels and FSSAI

Get your FSSAI registration or licence before you sell. Print the net weight, packing date, best-before date and FSSAI number on every pack.

4. Pack for freshness

Tea picks up smells and moisture easily. Use airtight, food-grade pouches with a zip, and a box outside. Small packs of 100 g or 250 g stay fresher and let buyers try before buying more.

5. Price small packs fairly

Work out the cost of tea, pouch, box, label, shipping and payment fees. Then price each pack size on its own. A sampler pack of three teas is a good first order.

6. Gift boxes for the season

Diwali, New Year and corporate gifting bring the biggest orders. Make a tea gift box at two price points, listed as one product with a clear list of what is inside.

7. Brewing tips win repeat buyers

Put a small card in each parcel: how much tea, how long to brew, with or without milk. Buyers who make a good cup come back.

8. Stay in touch

Daily tea drinkers run out every few weeks. Send a short WhatsApp note when their pack is likely to finish — only to buyers who agreed.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Health claims like "cures" or "burns fat".
  • Big packs that go stale.
  • Mixing old and new stock in one pack.
  • Using photos copied from other brands.
