You sent an order update or an offer. Now you stare at the ticks. What do they actually tell you? Here is a plain guide to WhatsApp ticks — and what a business should do with that information.

What each tick means

  • One grey tick: the message left your side and reached WhatsApp's servers. It has not reached the customer's phone yet.
  • Two grey ticks: the message reached the customer's phone.
  • Two blue ticks: the customer opened the chat and saw the message.

Why a message stays on one tick

  • The customer's phone is switched off or has no internet.
  • They have not opened WhatsApp for a while.
  • The number is no longer on WhatsApp, or has changed.
  • They may have blocked your number.

One tick for a few hours is normal. One tick for many days usually means the number is inactive.

Why there is no blue tick

Many people turn off read receipts in their privacy settings. Then you will see two grey ticks even after they read the message. So "delivered but not read" does not always mean "ignored".

What businesses should do

  • Don't send the same message again and again because there is no blue tick. Repeated messages lead to blocks.
  • Clean your list. Numbers that stay on one tick across several campaigns are probably dead. Remove them.
  • Judge by replies and orders, not only by blue ticks. A message that brings orders is working.
  • For important updates like delivery or payment, follow up with a call only if there is no reply after a reasonable time.

Ticks and the WhatsApp Business API

On the WhatsApp Business API, each message also reports a status — sent, delivered, read or failed — to the platform you use. This helps you see how a campaign performed, which numbers failed and when to clean your list. Remember the same rule applies: if a customer has turned off read receipts, "read" may not show even when they saw it.

A quick example

You send a Diwali offer to 1,000 customers. 950 show delivered, 600 show read, and 40 reply. The 50 undelivered numbers are worth checking; the 40 replies are your real result. Next time, improve the message to get more replies — not more blue ticks.
