Ask any small Indian brand what hurts most and the answer is the same: parcels that come back unopened. You paid to send it, you paid to get it back, and the product was out of stock the whole time.
The size of the problem

The gap between COD and prepaid is the whole story. Anything that turns an unsure COD order into a confirmed one — or into a prepaid one — pays for itself quickly.
The message that does the work
Send it as soon as the order is placed, not the day you dispatch. Keep it to four things:
- What they ordered, in plain words.
- The amount to be paid at the door.
- The delivery address you have, so a wrong one gets corrected.
- Two buttons: Confirm order and Cancel.
Example: "Hi Anjali, your order for 1 Cotton Kurta (M) is ready to ship. ₹1,299 to pay on delivery at: 14, MG Road, Indore 452001. Tap Confirm to dispatch today, or Cancel if you have changed your mind."
Three things this changes
- Wrong addresses get fixed before the parcel travels, which is a large part of failed deliveries.
- Unserious orders cancel themselves at no cost to you.
- Confirmed orders are remembered. The customer knows a parcel is coming and has cash ready.
Nudging COD to prepaid
Add one line to the same message: "Pay online now and shipping is free." A share of buyers will switch, and prepaid orders come back far less often. Keep the offer small and honest — free shipping or a small discount is enough.
What to do with orders nobody confirms
That is your policy, not the platform's. Many brands dispatch high-value COD orders only after a confirmation, and ship low-value ones anyway. Some call the customer once. Decide the rule, write it down, and let your team follow it.
How it is set up
These messages go out on the official WhatsApp Business API as approved templates. Your store can send them automatically through the API, or your team can send them from a shared inbox. Plans start at ₹790 a month with no setup fee.

FAQs
What is RTO in ecommerce?
Return to origin — a parcel that comes back to the seller undelivered. In India it happens far more on cash-on-delivery orders than on prepaid ones.
When should the confirmation message be sent?
As soon as the order is placed, not on dispatch day. That leaves time to correct a wrong address or cancel before anything ships.
Can the store send these messages automatically?
Yes, through the WhatsApp Business API on the Pro plan, or manually from a shared team inbox on lower plans.
