A world-class port next door — and what it means for you
Vizhinjam is built for giant ships moving containers between continents. Over time it should make shipping from South India faster and cheaper, and bring logistics jobs and new businesses to the city.
For a spice seller, an ayurvedic maker or a handloom weaver, that future is real but not immediate. Export needs buyers, paperwork and freight partners. Most small businesses should first build steady sales inside India — and a website is where that starts.
The businesses that are selling nationally today will be the ones ready to export when the port's benefits reach them.
What the store does not do — no international shipping or foreign currency
With a big port in the news, sellers ask whether the website can ship abroad and show dollar prices. It cannot.
Prices are in rupees only, and courier automation covers India. There is no currency switcher, and overseas shipping is not built into checkout.
For the occasional overseas order, the honest route is manual: take the enquiry on WhatsApp, quote freight through your own courier or export partner, and take payment through your gateway if it accepts international cards. Many Kerala sellers also serve NRI families through relatives in India who order on their behalf.
Build the Indian business first. It pays for the export plans later.
What Trivandrum sells well across India
- Ayurvedic products — oils, powders and wellness items from licensed makers.
- Spices — pepper, cardamom, cloves and blends, with origin and harvest details.
- Banana chips, halwa and snacks — dry items that travel.
- Kerala handloom — Balaramapuram sarees and mundu, a famous local weave.
- Coir and handicrafts — light items that suit parcel shipping.
Write the origin plainly. "Balaramapuram handloom" and "grown in Idukki" are details buyers search for and trust.
Handloom needs honest photos and details
A Balaramapuram saree is simple and elegant, and it is easy to copy with a powerloom. Buyers pay for the real thing if they can see it.
Photograph each piece in daylight: full drape, border close-up, and the texture. List fabric, zari type, length and width, and whether it is handwoven. Keep stock at one for unique pieces so a sold piece closes itself.
Ayurvedic products and the rules around them
If you sell ayurvedic items, put the licence number on the page, say whether each product is classical or proprietary, and describe what it contains and how to use it. Avoid claims about curing conditions.
Shelf life and storage belong on every product page, because many oils and powders lose quality in heat. Buyers in north India will thank you for the storage line in May.
Money and delivery from the southern tip
A parcel leaving the southern tip of the country takes longer to reach Delhi or Lucknow than one leaving Nagpur. That is geography, and buyers accept it when you are upfront. Write expected days by region on the delivery page — Kerala, the rest of the South, and north India separately.
Most buyers of spices and handloom pay online without fuss. For a costly saree, ask for part of the amount in advance so a returned parcel does not hurt. The higher plans book courier pickups by themselves, and the buyer follows the parcel on a tracking page that carries your name.
Pack oils in sealed bottles inside a second bag, and spices in airtight pouches. Say so on the page; buyers who have received a leaking parcel before will notice.
Being found by origin and name
Searches for Kerala products usually carry a place: "Balaramapuram saree online", "Idukki cardamom", "Kerala banana chips", "ayurvedic oil from Kerala". The place name is what makes the search specific, so it belongs in your product title.
Your pages get tidy web addresses and titles you can edit yourself, and new products are added to Google's list of your pages automatically. After a few months the visitor report tells you which Indian states buy the most from you — useful to know before any export plan.
