Your dispatch position is a selling point
Courier pricing in India is zonal. A seller in Chennai pays north-zone rates to reach Delhi and a seller in Delhi pays south-zone rates to reach Chennai. From Nagpur, a very large share of the country falls into cheaper zones than it would from either coast.
That shows up in two places on a store. First in what you can afford to promise — a free-shipping threshold that would be painful from Kochi is comfortable from here. Second in delivery timelines, because you can quote three to four days to most of the country without hedging.
Threshold-based shipping is where you set that free-delivery cart value, and it is worth calculating properly rather than copying whatever a competitor uses. Take your actual average courier bill per order and set the threshold above it, not at it.
Then say it on the page. "Dispatched from central India, most metros in 3–4 days" is a concrete claim a buyer can check, and it does more work than any amount of language about fast delivery.
It is also worth checking your own numbers rather than assuming. Pull three months of courier bills, group them by destination state, and look at what you are actually paying per kilo where. Most sellers find one or two zones they have been quietly overcharging themselves on, and fixing that is a margin decision you can make in an afternoon.
Selling to the districts around you
The other half of the Nagpur market is not Pan India at all. It is Vidarbha — Wardha, Chandrapur, Amravati, Bhandara and the towns between them, where organised retail is thin and people already come to Nagpur to buy.
Those buyers behave differently from a metro customer. They are more likely to want cash on delivery, more likely to call before ordering, and considerably more forgiving about delivery time if you are honest about it upfront.
WhatsApp ordering matters more here than a polished checkout flow. A buyer in Chandrapur will send you a message asking whether you have something before they trust a website with money, and the store's job is to make that conversation easy and then finish the order properly.
Order management keeps both sides in one queue, so a courier parcel going to Bengaluru and a local delivery to Ramdaspeth do not live in two different notebooks.
What the courier integrations do and do not cover
This needs stating plainly because Nagpur has a lot of businesses shipping things bigger than a parcel.
Shiprocket and Nimbus are parcel networks. They handle labels, pickup, tracking and returns for anything a person can carry. That covers most retail categories completely.
What they do not cover is freight. If you move goods by transporter or part-load, there is no freight rate lookup and no transporter booking inside the admin panel. The store captures the order cleanly and the logistics stay with your own transporter, the way they already are.
For most sellers this is a non-issue. For a few it is the whole business, and it is better known before the build than discovered after.
Grocery, namkeen and the weight problem
A large part of what Nagpur ships is food — oranges in season, dry provisions, namkeen, spices. Food has a specific commercial problem: it is heavy relative to its price.
A five hundred rupee order weighing three kilos can cost a hundred and fifty rupees to deliver, and once you have absorbed a return the order was never worth taking. The fix is not better packaging, it is pricing and cart size.
Set a minimum order value for the categories where this bites. Use frequently bought together so a single item becomes three. Publish weight per product as a field, because a buyer who understands they are ordering four kilos objects less to the shipping line.
Perishables need one more piece of honesty. There is no batch tracking and no expiry alerting in the platform. Shelf life goes on the product page as text you control, and rotation stays a discipline in your godown.
Getting found by buyers who do not know your name
Most Nagpur businesses we speak to have all their demand coming from people who already know them. That is a solid base and a ceiling at the same time.
Search is how you get past it, and it is slower and less glamorous than advertising. What it needs is product pages that exist — one page per product, with the specific name a buyer would type, not a catalogue PDF and a contact form.
The platform generates clean URLs, structured data and a sitemap that updates the moment you publish, so a new product can be found rather than sitting invisible. That groundwork is included from the first plan.
Pair it with a Google Business Profile. Between the two you answer both kinds of search — the one for a product you happen to stock, and the one for a shop near a particular part of the city.
Money, and what actually clears
Nagpur sits in the middle on payment behaviour too. Prepaid works better than in the smaller Vidarbha towns and less well than in Pune or Mumbai.
UPI and Razorpay cover cards, netbanking and wallets. Keep COD available, because turning it off in this market costs you real orders — but put a ceiling on it rather than accepting any value.
Partial COD is the middle path. A small advance collected online filters out the order placed carelessly, without turning away a genuine first-time buyer who wants to pay cash.
GST invoicing issues a proper tax invoice on every order. If any share of your sales is to businesses rather than households, this is the thing that decides whether you get paid on time.
