The student market is a real ecommerce business
Patna's coaching economy is large, concentrated and highly seasonal, and very little of it is served properly online.
Books, previous-year papers, note sets, stationery, exam-specific material — the demand is enormous and it arrives in waves. A student in Gaya or Darbhanga who needs a specific title has almost no reliable way to get it except by travelling.
Two things make this category work on a website. The first is that every title needs its own page with the exact name, edition and year, because that is what people type. A category page listing forty books does not rank and does not convert; forty product pages do.
The second is honest stock. Inventory management takes an item off sale at zero, which matters here more than in most categories because a student who orders a book they need for an exam and receives an apology two days later does not come back.
Your buyer is in a district, not in the city
The commercially interesting part of the Bihar market is the towns, and serving them needs a slightly different setup.
Address quality is genuinely the practical problem. A delivery address in a smaller town is often a landmark rather than a street — near a particular temple, behind a particular school. Couriers work with that, but only if the address field gives people room to write it and the phone number is correct.
Make the address form generous. A single cramped line produces the failed delivery; two lines and a landmark field produce a successful one. Make the phone number mandatory and validated, because that is what the delivery agent will actually use.
RTO prevention checks the PIN code and flags addresses that historically fail. It cannot fix a wrong address, but it tells you which orders are worth a confirmation call before they go out — and one call is cheaper than a return.
The search results here are weak, which is your opening
Search for most product categories with a Patna qualifier and the results are thin. Directory listings, a few marketplace pages, very few actual local sellers with proper product pages.
That is unusual and it will not last. In Mumbai or Bengaluru you are competing against businesses that have been doing SEO for years. Here, a store with real product pages and clean technical groundwork can appear on the first page for terms that genuinely matter, within months rather than years.
What that requires is unglamorous: one page per product, the specific name in the title, a real description rather than a copied one, clean URLs, structured data and a sitemap that updates as you publish. All of that is included from the first plan.
The window is open now because so few local sellers have taken it. That is the most useful thing about this market and the easiest to waste.
Payments, without pretending
Cash on delivery carries a much larger share here than in a metro, and no amount of website design changes that in the first year.
So build for it rather than against it. Keep COD open, and use Partial COD above a value you decide — a small advance collected online at checkout, the balance at the door. It filters out the casual order without turning away a first-time buyer who has never paid online.
UPI adoption in Bihar has moved faster than most people assume, particularly among younger buyers. Offer it prominently, because the student ordering a book is far more likely to pay online than their parent ordering household goods.
One thing the platform does not do: there is no subscription or auto-refill billing. For a monthly supply order, the customer places it deliberately each time. What you can do is keep the order history so repeating last month's list takes two taps.
Festivals decide the year
Chhath, Durga Puja, Diwali and the wedding months carry a share of annual sales that would look implausible written down. Everything either holds together in those weeks or it does not.
Two things matter. Stock that reflects reality — inventory management with per-product limits so you are not accepting orders you cannot fulfil. And a stated cut-off date on the page for anything that has to arrive before a particular day.
Coupon management handles the festive offer. To be clear about what is not there: no countdown timers and no urgency badges. If stock is genuinely limited, a sentence saying so is both more honest and more effective than a ticking clock.
Abandoned cart recovery earns its place in exactly these weeks, when traffic is high and half-finished orders pile up faster than anyone can follow them by hand.

What to send us to start
The build moves at the speed of your content, not our code. What actually holds projects up is waiting for product details.
Send whatever you already have: a product list in any form, photographs, your GST number, the categories you want, and the delivery areas you cover. A billing software export is ideal because it usually imports cleanly.
Nothing else is needed to begin the conversation. If your catalogue is large and photographs are missing for most of it, say so early at that first call rather than later. Starting with two hundred properly listed products beats waiting six months for two thousand — you can add the rest while the first ones are already being found in search.
One habit worth building from week one: every time a customer at the counter asks for something you do not have listed, write it down. That list is better keyword research than any tool, because it comes from people in your actual catchment asking for things they are ready to buy today.
