Serviceability is the first problem, not the last
Guwahati itself is well covered. Beyond it, coverage varies sharply — some districts are served by one courier and not another, some are prepaid-only, and delivery timelines to the hill states run considerably longer than the national picture.
Be honest about this in the interface rather than discovering it after payment. A PIN code check on the product or cart page, with a realistic delivery estimate, prevents the single worst experience a store can produce: taking money for an order that cannot be delivered.
It also stops the wrong customer complaint. A buyer told "seven to nine days to your area" before paying waits patiently. The same buyer told "three to five days" and then made to wait nine writes the review you will be living with.
One thing worth saying clearly: we cannot create serviceability. Which PIN codes a courier reaches is their network, not our software. What the store can do is reflect that reality accurately instead of pretending it away.
Two directions of demand, both real
Guwahati sellers have two distinct markets and it is worth knowing which one you are building for.
Outbound is the bigger commercial opportunity — tea, bamboo and cane work, textiles, organic produce, sold to the rest of India. Those customers are in Delhi, Bengaluru and Mumbai, they pay online comfortably, and shipping out of Guwahati to a metro is far more predictable than shipping into the interior of the region.
Inbound is the regional market — serving Assam and the neighbouring states from Guwahati as the distribution point. Higher COD share, longer timelines, and a customer base with genuinely few local alternatives, which is exactly why it is worth serving well.
Most stores end up doing both, with different shipping rules and different delivery promises for each. Threshold-based shipping and order management keep that manageable without running two systems.
Tea, and the provenance question
Assam tea sold online has a specific credibility problem: a buyer in Pune has no way to tell your garden-fresh leaf from something repacked in a warehouse.
The answer is specifics rather than adjectives. Garden name, grade, harvest flush, elevation, processing method — as structured fields on the product page, not as marketing copy. A buyer who knows what a second flush is will filter for it, and a buyer who does not will still register that you have written down things a repacker cannot.
Product reviews do the rest. In a category built on trust, ten reviews from customers who reordered are worth more than any certification badge you could design.
Weight and shelf life belong on the page as fields too. There is no batch tracking or expiry alerting in the platform, so the storage guidance and best-before line are text you write and control.
Payments in a market that still prefers cash
Cash on delivery carries a substantial share of regional orders, and it does not shrink because you would prefer it to.
The complication specific to this region is that a return costs disproportionately more. A refused parcel that travelled from Guwahati into a hill district and back has consumed forward and reverse freight on a route where freight is already expensive.
Partial COD is the sensible middle. A modest advance collected online at checkout filters out the casual order, and the balance is collected at the door. It preserves COD as an option without carrying its full risk.
RTO prevention flags PIN codes that historically fail, which is more useful here than in most markets — it tells you which orders deserve a confirmation call before dispatch. And keep UPI prominent, because prepaid adoption among younger buyers in Guwahati is well ahead of the regional average.
Being found by buyers outside the region
If your commercial future is outbound, then your customers do not know Guwahati and are not searching for it. They are searching for the product.
That makes product pages the entire strategy. One page per item, named the way people search — the specific tea grade, the craft, the material — with a real description rather than a supplier's paragraph.
The platform generates clean URLs, structured data and a sitemap that updates the moment you publish, which is included from the first plan. Beyond that it is content and patience: this is a six to twelve month game and anyone promising faster is selling you something.
The one advantage you have is that competition in these niches is thin. Very few sellers of North East products have proper product pages, so the ceiling is higher here than in a crowded category.

How we work with you from here
The entire process runs remotely. A call to establish what you sell and where you can deliver, then your product list, photographs, logo, GST number and the delivery areas you are confident about.
We set up the server, configure the domain and SSL, load the catalogue and hand over the admin panel with a walkthrough. Three to five working days on Starter is normal.
After launch you run it. Adding products, changing prices, publishing offers and editing SEO fields are admin panel tasks, not support requests — and the source code is yours, so the store can move to any developer later.
Requirements are agreed on one call, content comes over WhatsApp or email, and questions during the build are answered the same way. Distance is not a practical obstacle here. We work with clients across the country the same way, and nothing about the build requires anyone to be in the same city. What does matter is that you are clear early about which delivery areas you are genuinely confident serving, because that decision shapes the shipping rules more than any other input you give us.
