Research by the Baymard Institute puts the average online cart abandonment rate at around 70%. In simple words: for every ten people who add something to their cart, about seven leave without buying. You can't save all of them, but small changes can bring a few back — and that adds up quickly.

1. Surprise shipping charges

The top reason buyers leave is an extra cost they see only at the end. Show your delivery charge on the product page, and say clearly above what amount delivery is free.

2. No cash on delivery

Many Indian buyers still prefer to pay at the door, especially for a first order from a new store. Offer COD, or partial COD with a small advance for costly items.

3. Forced sign-up

Asking for a password before checkout makes people leave. Keep checkout short: name, phone, address and payment.

4. Slow pages on mobile

Most buyers shop on phones, often on patchy data. Use compressed photos and avoid heavy videos on product pages.

5. Not enough trust

A new buyer wonders: is this store real? Show your phone number, WhatsApp, address, return policy and real customer reviews. A GST invoice with every order also signals a proper business.

6. Unclear delivery time

"When will it arrive?" is a big question, especially before festivals. Write expected delivery times for your city and for the rest of India.

7. Coupon hunting

A "coupon code" box makes some buyers leave to search for codes. If you run an offer, mention the code on the product page so nobody has to hunt.

8. Payment failures

UPI sometimes fails at busy times. Offer more than one payment option — UPI, cards, net banking and COD — so a failed payment doesn't end the sale.

Bring back the ones who left

Even with a perfect checkout, some buyers get distracted. An abandoned-cart reminder a few hours later brings a share of them back. Keep it friendly: "You left something in your cart — it's still waiting for you."

Check your own store

Place a test order on your phone, on mobile data, as if you were a new buyer. Note every moment you felt unsure or annoyed. Fix those first.

Our online stores include COD, Razorpay payments, coupon codes, reviews, GST invoices and abandoned-cart recovery, with partial COD on Pro and Elite. See online store plans or read abandoned cart message examples.
