Most people who add something to a cart do not buy — at least not right away. The phone rang, the payment page was slow, or they wanted to think about it. An abandoned cart message on WhatsApp is a friendly tap on the shoulder, and many Indian stores report recovering a real share of those carts this way.
Before you start: opt-in first
Only message shoppers who gave their number and agreed to receive updates, for example with a checkbox at checkout. Cart reminders count as marketing messages, so keep them few and useful.
The 3-step plan
Step 1 — after about 1 hour: a simple reminder
"Hi Sneha, you left the blue block-print kurti in your cart at Rang Boutique. It's still available in your size. Complete your order here: [link]"
No discount yet. Many shoppers only needed a reminder.
Step 2 — after about 24 hours: answer the doubt
Most carts are left because of a question — size, delivery time, returns or payment safety.
"Hi Sneha, still thinking about the kurti? It ships in 2 days, and you can exchange the size within 7 days. Any questions? Just reply here."
For cash-on-delivery shoppers: "Cash on delivery is available — you pay only when the parcel reaches you."
Step 3 — after about 48 hours: a small, final nudge
"Hi Sneha, your cart is waiting. Use code COMEBACK5 for 5% off, valid till tomorrow night. [link]"
Keep the offer small and real. If you give big discounts every time, shoppers learn to leave carts on purpose.
More examples you can adapt
- Low stock (only if true): "Only 2 pieces left in size M of the kurti in your cart."
- Free shipping: "Add one more item worth ₹200 and delivery is free."
- Help offer: "Having trouble at checkout? Reply and we will help you place the order."
Rules that keep messages welcome
- Stop the moment the order is placed.
- No more than three messages for one cart.
- Never fake urgency — fake stock counts and timers are banned dark patterns in India.
- Always let people reply to a real person.
How stores send these
Cart reminders need your store to tell WhatsApp when a cart is left. On the official WhatsApp Business API, your store or a developer sends approved templates with the shopper's name, product and link filled in. On our Pro plan, your store connects through the API, and every reply comes into a shared inbox where your team can answer size or delivery questions and close the sale.
See WhatsApp for ecommerce brands or our plans. Our online stores also include abandoned cart recovery.

FAQs
When should I send an abandoned cart message on WhatsApp?
A simple reminder after about an hour, a helpful message answering common doubts after about a day, and an optional small offer after about two days.
Should every cart reminder include a discount?
No. Start without a discount. Many shoppers just need a reminder. Use a small offer only in the last message.
Are cart reminders marketing messages?
Yes. Send them only to shoppers who opted in, and stop as soon as the order is placed.
How can my store send cart reminders automatically?
Through the WhatsApp Business API. Your store or developer sends approved templates when a cart is left. On our platform, this is done on the Pro plan.
