Diyas, glass lanterns, ceramic mugs, pickle jars, perfume bottles — some of the best festive products are also the easiest to break. A damaged parcel means a refund, a second shipment and an unhappy buyer. Here is how to pack fragile items for shipping in India so they arrive whole.
1. Wrap each piece on its own
Wrap every item separately in paper first, then in at least two or three layers of bubble wrap. Never let two glass items touch inside the box.
- For plates and bowls, place foam sheets between pieces.
- For cups and mugs, stuff the inside with paper too.
- For jars and bottles, tape the lid and add a plastic sleeve in case of leaks.
2. Choose the right box
Use a strong corrugated box — double-wall for heavy or very fragile items. It should be a little bigger than the wrapped item, with room for about 5 cm of cushioning on every side. Too big and the item slides around; too small and there is no cushion.
3. Fill every gap
Put a layer of filler at the bottom — paper, air pillows or packing peanuts. Place the item in the centre, then fill the sides and top until nothing moves when you shake the box gently.
4. Use the double-box method for costly pieces
Put the packed box inside a slightly larger box with more cushioning between the two. It costs a little more but saves expensive breakages.
5. Seal and label clearly
- Seal all seams with strong packing tape in an H pattern.
- Add "FRAGILE — Handle with care" stickers on several sides.
- Add "This side up" arrows for bottles and jars.
6. Take a photo before sealing
A quick photo or short video of the packed item helps if you ever need to raise a damage claim with the courier.
7. Tell the buyer
Write on the product page how you pack fragile items. Ask buyers to record an unboxing video and report damage within 48 hours. Clear rules make claims easy and fair.
8. Set the right weight and size
Fragile items need bigger boxes, and couriers charge by volumetric weight (length × width × height in cm ÷ 5000). Enter the packed size and weight correctly so your shipping charge covers the real cost.
Common mistakes
- Reusing weak boxes.
- Using only newspaper for glass.
- Packing several fragile items without dividers.
- Forgetting "Fragile" labels.
Our online stores let you set packed weight for every product, and on Pro and Elite orders go to the courier through Shiprocket. See Shiprocket courier automation or read how to set shipping charges.
