Two different businesses, two different stores
Kolkata sellers usually fall into one of two camps, and building the wrong kind of store for your camp is the most common mistake we see.
If you are a Burrabazar wholesaler
Your buyer is a retailer, not a consumer. They want rates, minimum quantities, and a way to negotiate. Build a catalogue with clear pricing and a WhatsApp enquiry route, use the coupon engine with threshold rules for volume breaks, and give regulars an account with order history so reordering takes a minute. Treat consumer checkout orders as a bonus rather than the main event.
If you are a handloom or craft seller
Your buyer is an individual who wants the story as much as the product. Kantha work, tant sarees, dokra, jute — these sell on provenance. Spend the effort on photography and on explaining who made it and how. Product video on Pro and Elite is genuinely useful for showing weave and texture.
Being clear about which of these you are, before the build starts, saves weeks.
Where the demand actually is
Burrabazar
Textiles, hosiery, plastics, stationery — enormous volume, almost entirely offline. The traders who go online early are reaching retailers in Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam and the North-East who currently travel here to buy.
Handloom and craft
Tant, jamdani, baluchari, kantha, dokra, jute. National demand, urban buyers, and a category where a well-told product page genuinely outperforms a discount.
College Street
Books — huge catalogue, low average order value. Threshold-based shipping matters here more than anywhere, because free delivery on a ₹180 order will bleed you.
Sweets and food
A famous category with a hard constraint: most Bengali sweets do not ship well. The ones that do — nolen gur products, dry sweets, packaged items — work, and shelf life belongs on the product page.
Shipping from the east
Kolkata has one genuine logistical disadvantage worth naming: it is further from the western and southern consumption centres than Delhi or Mumbai, so transit times run longer and courier rates a little higher.
This is manageable, but only if the store is honest about it. An optimistic delivery estimate that you miss costs you more in reviews and support messages than a realistic one ever costs in conversions.
What helps: threshold-based shipping rules so you set free delivery at a value that actually protects your margin, order tracking on your own domain so customers stop messaging for updates, and courier automation on Pro and Elite so orders push into Shiprocket or Nimbus without anyone opening a dashboard.
Kolkata is also the natural gateway to the North-East, which is under-served by most sellers. If your products travel well, that is a market with far less competition than the metros.
COD, and keeping it from eating your margin
Eastern India runs a higher COD share than the western metros, and refusal rates follow. Ignoring that is how a store looks profitable on paper and is not.
Partial COD on Pro and Elite collects a small advance online at checkout with the balance on delivery. It is the single most effective control available, because someone who has paid even a small amount upfront rarely refuses the parcel.
PIN code state detection flags high-risk delivery areas before dispatch rather than after the parcel returns. And per-product COD toggles let you keep cash on delivery available on low-value items while requiring prepayment on the ones you cannot afford to have come back.
Cost and working together
Plans are one-time. Starter gives you a complete working store with Razorpay, COD, GST invoicing and the admin panel. Pro adds courier automation, Partial COD, reviews, product video and abandoned-cart recovery. Elite adds Meta CAPI, WhatsApp automation and advanced analytics.
Hosting (~₹500–800 a month) and a domain (~₹800 a year) are paid directly to those providers. No markup from us, no commission on orders.
We are based in Indore, not Kolkata, and West Bengal clients are served remotely over WhatsApp and calls with a staging link to review. If you need someone who can physically come to your Burrabazar shop to photograph stock, a local developer is the better fit.
