A WhatsApp opt-in simply means the customer agreed to get messages from your business. It is the first rule of the WhatsApp Business API, and it is also the thing that keeps your number safe. People who asked to hear from you read your messages. Strangers block them.

Why opt-in matters so much

When people block or report your messages, your number's quality rating drops, and Meta limits how many new people you can reach. Opt-in lists get far fewer blocks. So collecting permission is not paperwork — it is how your WhatsApp marketing keeps working.

7 easy ways to collect WhatsApp opt-ins

  1. QR code at the counter. Print "Scan to get offers on WhatsApp". The QR opens a chat with a prefilled message like "Yes, send me updates". When the customer sends it, that is an opt-in.
  2. QR on the bill and carry bag. The same QR, printed where customers look after buying.
  3. Tick box at website checkout. "Send me order updates and offers on WhatsApp." Keep it unticked by default.
  4. Click-to-WhatsApp ads. A customer who taps your ad and messages you has started the conversation. Ask in the first reply if they want future updates.
  5. Website WhatsApp button. Customers who message you from your site can be asked the same question.
  6. Admission, registration and booking forms. Schools, clinics and gyms can add one line to the form they already use.
  7. Ask existing customers once. Send one polite message to past buyers asking if they want updates. Keep only those who say yes.

What does not count as an opt-in

  • A number bought from a list seller.
  • Numbers copied from a WhatsApp group.
  • A visiting card someone gave you at an event, without asking about messages.

These can get your number blocked and your templates restricted. They are not worth the risk.

Keep a simple record

Add a column in your contact sheet: how and when each person opted in — "QR at counter, 12 Sep" or "website checkout". If anyone ever asks, you have the answer.

Always give a way out

Every marketing message should end with a line like "Reply STOP to stop these messages". People who can leave easily rarely report you, and the ones who stay are your real customers.

Next step

Once you have opt-ins, you can send campaigns on the official WhatsApp Business API. Read how WhatsApp broadcasts reach opted-in customers or see our plans from ₹790 a month.

FAQs

What is a WhatsApp opt-in?

It is a customer's agreement to receive messages from your business on WhatsApp — for example by scanning your QR and sending a message, or ticking a box at checkout.

Can I message numbers I bought from a list?

No. Bought numbers are not opt-ins. Messaging them leads to blocks, a lower quality rating and restrictions on your number.

Should I record how each customer opted in?

Yes. Keep one column in your contact sheet with how and when each person agreed, such as QR at the counter or website checkout.
