Nobody is browsing — they were told to buy this
A uniform customer arrives with a school name, a class, and no interest in your range. They want to know one thing: do you have this school's uniform, and in the right size.
Which means the store should be organised by school first, not by garment. A page per school, listing exactly the items that school requires — shirt, trousers or pinafore, tie, belt, socks, house tee, blazer where applicable — is the whole design.
Anything that makes them browse is friction. A parent who has to work out which of four shades of grey is right will ring the shop, and you have gained nothing over the counter.
The catalogue lets you create and name categories freely, so a school-first structure takes an evening to build and is worth more than any homepage.
The size is a guess, and everybody knows it
Children grow between the measurement and the wearing. Parents buy a size up on purpose. Grandparents buy without measuring at all. In this category a high exchange rate is not a failure, it is the normal operating condition.
Two things reduce it. Publish actual garment measurements — chest, length, waist — not just a number, because a size 32 means nothing across two manufacturers. And state the age range each size roughly suits, because that is how the buyer is actually thinking.
Then say plainly what happens if it does not fit. A clear, short exchange policy on the page converts better than a generous but vague one, because the parent's real fear is being stuck with something unusable in the week school starts.
Returns and exchange handling is part of the platform, so the process has somewhere to live rather than being a WhatsApp negotiation each time.
What the store does not do — no group order form
The thing a uniform seller asks for first does not exist. There is no bulk or group order form — a buyer cannot enter one line for a shirt and then type the quantity against each size in a single grid.
Every size is a separate variant added to the cart separately. For a parent with two children that is mildly tedious. For a school ordering two hundred pieces across nine sizes it is genuinely impractical, and that order will keep happening on paper or on a call.
Which is the honest answer: the store handles the parent well and does not replace the institutional order. Most uniform businesses run exactly that way already — retail online, school contracts offline — and it is better to design around that than to expect the site to carry both.
We would rather say this before the build than have you discover it in the first week of the season.
Two weeks decide the year
Uniform demand is not seasonal so much as compressed. A very large share of the year's orders land in the days around the session starting, and the rest trickles.
That window rewards preparation, not cleverness. The catalogue has to be complete and correct before it opens, because there is no time to fix listings while orders arrive. Stock has to be honest, since an order accepted for a size that ran out yesterday costs a refund in the exact week you cannot afford one.
Publish early for another reason too. A page put up a week before the session has no chance of being found; the same page published three months earlier does. Search takes time that the season does not give you.
Coupons and delivery rules are yours to set from the admin panel, so a free-delivery threshold for the rush can be switched on and off without anyone's help.
The tricity is one market with three sets of schools
Parents in Mohali and Panchkula send children to schools in Chandigarh and the other way round, so your catchment is wider than your address suggests.
Practically that means local delivery is worth doing properly — stated areas, a stated charge, and a realistic timeline. It also means the school-first structure matters more, since a parent in Zirakpur searching for a particular school's uniform is not going to browse a general clothing store.
This is a market that pays online more readily than most of the country, which is worth using. Prepaid orders do not come back and do not need filtering. Keep cash on delivery for those who want it, and use partial COD on larger orders where a small advance filters out the ones that were never serious.
Beyond uniforms, on the same store
A uniform business that only sells uniforms is idle for ten months, and the same customer buys other things.
The obvious extensions sell themselves to a parent already on the site — sports kit and house tees, school bags and shoes, winter layers, and the stationery that goes with a new session. None of it needs a separate store; it needs a second set of categories and honest photographs.
Variants are where a clothing store of any kind quietly breaks. Set up size and colour as proper variants of one product rather than as separate listings, at the start. Getting it wrong means every price change becomes an afternoon and the catalogue becomes unmanageable by the second season.
Customer records keep the history, which in this trade is unusually useful — a parent who bought a size 30 last June is buying a 32 this June, and both of you can see it.
What it costs and how the build runs
Starter is a one-time ₹4,990 — no monthly fee, no commission on your sales, and the code and database are yours. Pro and Elite add courier automation, partial COD and server-side tracking when the volume justifies them.
We work from Indore over WhatsApp and phone. To start, send the schools you supply with their item lists, garment measurements per size, photographs, your delivery areas and charges, and your exchange policy in one sentence. The school list is what the whole structure is built from, so send that first.
